A Glimpse into the Heartstrings Program…
Heartstrings programming connects the teaching aspects of bibliotherapy with the principles of narrative medicine to provide children a creative and therapeutic outlet for self-expression. Book titles, journal prompts, and accompanying activities are packaged into succinct Pocket Guides designed to serve specific populations.
Reading aloud, an important aspect of bibliotherapy, nurtures connection while Heartstrings’ specific book suggestions provide relatable scenarios meant to inspire meaningful discussion.
Journaling ideas included provide an opportunity to write and draw freely and an additional means for processing private thoughts and feelings. Specific and pointed journal prompts encourage a deeper exploration of story characters and the emotions tied to pertinent and difficult situations.
Heartstrings’ accompanying activities provide an extension of the stories’ messages and a myriad of ways in which to further explore and process heartfelt emotions. Activity participation fosters connection and helps children acquire the coping skills needed to navigate difficult situations ………… ultimately finding hope, a sense of calm, and a special form of healing.
Each Heartstrings Focused Guide includes:
Recommended Book Titles with Story Summaries (10-12 titles per guide) for preschool, school-age, tweens, and teens
Accompanying Journal and Talking Prompts to encourage reflection, meaningful discussion, and creative expression
Extension Activities (15-20 interchangeable activities per guide - complete with reproducibles) to further learning, processing, and coping
